Jazz Train Live - April 14th 2025

Jazz train Live returned for its fifth season on Monday 12th April 2025 with yet another selection of guests from the extensive pool of talented jazz musicians living and working in the South West. As always the evening was hosted by the Simon Latarche quartet comprising of Sam Norman (Bass) and Keith Marshall (Drums), Mike Rowlands (saxophones) along with Simon at the piano.

The evening opened with members of Karnos joining the resident musicians for a rousing rendition of Simon’s 2010 track Summer Evening Moon before Mike lead the quartet performing some of his favourite standards including the beautiful Sam Rivers tune ‘Beatrice’.

The second half was then handed over to the exciting Karnos Brass Band lead by Trumpeter Joe Hamlen. Featuring Sinne Brock on Trombone Zac Schofield on Tuba, Claire Brock on drums and Mike Rowlands on Sax, the ensemble delighted the crowd with renditions of recent chart hits with a jazz twist. The rousing finale of Down By The Riverside involved all the evening’s performers and finished on the dot of 10pm in true JTL style!

In front of yet another large crowd plus an online worldwide audience, the show was well supported by a number of Source presenters and a healthy £150 was taken in donations by Source’s Helen Read, towards the new Studio Lodge project at Kimberly Park.

The whole evening was as always, recorded by Carey. Individual tracks from the evening are due to be played out on Source during the coming weeks.

On this occasion the special guests included talented singer and multi-instrumentalist Helen White plus the amazing Karnos Brass Band.

Next up, on the back of her recent launch of her successful debut CD ‘Never Too Late’, Helen White gave the audience a taste of this delightful album. She performed a selection of her original material from the disc plus a brand new piece entitled ‘Let Me Go’ due for release later this year.

The evening was yet another tremendous success and a genuine team effort once again from so many at Source. As always, professionally produced by Simon Neild with Carey Davies ably assisted by Steve Gruitt on hand to guarantee the superb sound quality that we have come to expect from such events whilst fellow Jazz Train presenter, Andy Coote, assisted Simon with interviews and introductions.
